The traditional sweets of San Isidro that you can not miss

San Isidro Doughnuts

The tontas, the listas, the lemon, the Santa Clara… A great variety of rosquillas del santo are displayed in the stalls of the verbena. The most classic are the rosquillas listas and the tontas, whose only difference is based on the sugar bath that is given on top. The Santa Clara ones have meringue and the French ones are coated with sugared almonds. Here you can find information about the history of the rosquillas del Santo.

Cotton candy in San Isidro

Cotton candy

It is impossible to go to a fair, whatever it is, without seeing dozens of children with their faces full of cotton candy. One of the most popular sweets among the youngest, but which, it is said, comes from Italy.

It is made simply with sugar heated and expelled with force in the form of fine threads. The cotton candy maker’s skill consists of twisting them around a wooden stick to form a cloud. A pleasure that melts in the mouth at the first bite.

Madrid Wafers

Wafers

One of the most typical sweets of Madrid. It is very peculiar to see how the chulapos and chulapas move the roulette of their barquillero. It is a metal contraption, on top of which is a spinning wheel. The traditional game consisted in that the friends had to spin the wheel and the one who got the lowest number paid the wafers to everyone.

For anyone who has not had the pleasure of tasting a wafer, it is a kind of wafer rolled up in the shape of a wafer. Years ago it was triangular or boat-shaped, hence the name “barquillo”.

It breaks easily and melts in the mouth leaving a soft and sweet taste that traps you until the end, which always comes too soon.

Sugared almonds

caramelized peanuts

The caramelized almond has always been the queen of the fairs. However, for years, we can find some stalls where all kinds of nuts are caramelized. The smell of caramelized sugar that the stalls give off makes you irresistible to approach them.

The garrapiñado is made with sugar that is slowly toasted in a large cauldron. It is important not to stop stirring so that the almonds do not stick or burn. It is one of the typical sweets of San Isidro that you cannot miss.

Candy apples in San Isidro

Caramel apples

Although it comes from the USA, this dessert has become so popular that it is impossible not to find it at any fair in Madrid.

It is an apple coated with a bright red candy, served as a lollipop. The caramel stays crunchy, so be careful not to hurt your gums when biting into it, but its sweet taste, in contrast to the apple, makes it one of the most appetizing desserts of San Isidro.

What is certain is that you can’t go to Madrid without trying some of these delicious traditional San Isidro sweets. And, if you are not in the capital for those dates, do not worry, because in Casa Mira you can try some of them throughout the year.
