Why we celebrate Father’s Day<\/h2>\n

There are speculations of all kinds, from being an invention of El Corte Ingl\u00e9s to sell more, to being an ancestral Catholic heritage. The truth is that Father’s Day is celebrated in many countries around the world, but not all of them celebrate it on the same day. <\/p>\n

Although it may seem that we have been celebrating Father’s<\/strong> Day on March 19<\/strong> all our lives, in<\/strong> reality in Spain we have been celebrating Father’s Day since 1948.<\/strong><\/p>\n

The reason that today we celebrate Father’s Day is Manuela Vicente Ferrero<\/strong>, a teacher who wanted to honor the fathers of her students after a demand of fathers who wanted to have a special day as mothers had.<\/p>\n

The teacher expressed this wish in the magazine El Magisterio Espa\u00f1ol<\/strong>, and the first day dedicated to fathers was celebrated with a mass, gifts that her own daughters had prepared, and a festival of theater, poetry and dance. The perfect day for the celebration was St. Joseph’s feast day<\/g> and, as the news spread in several publications and on the radio, it quickly reached the ears of one of the directors of Galer\u00edas Preciados<\/g>, who in 1953 made an advertising campaign together with the director of El Corte Ingl\u00e9s<\/g>. Since then, March 19 has been celebrated in Spain as a tribute to fathers. <\/p>\n

However, many other countries in Europe and Latin America adopted the U.S. date, i.e., the third Sunday in June, and March 19 is celebrated as Dia del Hombre.<\/strong><\/p>\n
