However, the <strong>typical recipe for this sweet <\/strong>has evolved over time and, nowadays, there are so many different types of torrijas that sometimes it is difficult to choose. <!--more--><\/p>\n<p>Although the <a href=\"https:\/\/casamira.es\/como-hacer-las-mejores-torrijas-semana-santa\/\"><strong>typical recipe<\/strong> <\/a>in which a hard bread is dipped in milk is the undisputed winner of Easter, the truth is that there are <strong>varieties of torrijas<\/strong> that are worth knowing, tasting and valuing.<\/p>\n<p>Evidently, the traditional recipe comes from more austere times when ingredients were very limited. Thanks to the variety and richness of the products available today, the torrija has reached levels that even touch gastronomic excellence. And, more than a few top chefs have won gastronomic prizes thanks to it.  <\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6971 aligncenter\" title=\"the new torrijas\" src=\"https:\/\/casamira.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/torrijas31040-%C3%97-800-px-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"the new torrijas\" width=\"401\" height=\"309\"><\/p>\n<h2>Where do torrijas come from?<\/h2>\n<p>It is said that the first recipe for torrijas comes from a <strong>Roman cook<\/strong>, Marcus Gavius Apicius, in the first century A.D. The recipe differed from the current one in that sugar was conspicuous by its absence and honey was used instead.<\/p>\n<p>As a curiosity, we can say that, in the Middle Ages, torrijas were given to laboring women to recover their strength after childbirth. And, years later, they began to be eaten during Lent to compensate for the calories lost during this time by not eating meat. <\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-6969 aligncenter\" title=\"different torrijas\" src=\"https:\/\/casamira.es\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/torrijas21040-%C3%97-800-px-300x231.jpg\" alt=\"different torrijas\" width=\"399\" height=\"307\"><\/p>\n<h2>The new torrijas of the 21st century<\/h2>\n<p>There are many ways to dip stale bread. Milk is still the preferred element, however, new times bring new gastronomic tastes that are more daring and innovative. <\/p>\n<p>Nowadays there are torrijas of all kinds. We are surprised to see that there are<strong> orange bread and chocolate chips torrijas<\/strong>, or <strong>torrijas with banana and cinnamon<\/strong>, which are prepared as a sandwich, in which the banana is imprisoned between the bread, to fry it later. <\/p>\n<p>Another alternative to the <strong>traditional torrijas recipe<\/strong> is <strong>torrijas with fruit<\/strong>. Even if it has fruit it does not mean that it is healthy, but it is clear that the pleasure of eating them is well worth a week at the gym. <\/p>\n<p>For those over 18 years old, we recommend the<strong> torrija with alcohol<\/strong>. You can choose from a wide variety of liquors, Bailey&#8217;s or red wine.
